The 24th edition of the Metropolitan Premier Cup was launched at a glittering function at the Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday evening, March 20, 2012.
The event was attended by the who’s-who of local football; administrators, media, city officials, corporate executives, ex-professionals and of course the future stars of Cape Town football.
Now in its 24th year the Metropolitan Premier Cup has become the premier U19 tournament in South Africa, attracting the best teams in the age category.
Tournament Director PJ Williams said, “A number of new teams have qualified this year. This is a clear indication that the standard of football in this age-group is improving and becoming more competitive every year.
The support of Metropolitan, whose vision of youth development though football, has enabled us to grow the tournament into what it is today.
We encourage every player to reach for the stars and achieve their best.”
Over the years this tournament has attracted crowds in excess of 30 000 growing annually and the popularity of the Metropolitan Premier Cup continues to grow.
As the entertainers finished their repertoire the anticipation amongst the crowd intensified as the LOC prepared for the group draw.
The final groups are;
Group A – ASD Academy, Orlando Pirates, City Lovers and Hanover Park FC
Group B – Bayhill United, TUKS, Morgenster United and Stars of Africa Academy
Group C – Moroka Swallows, Swallows (P.E.), Maties and Mr Price Parkhurst
Group D – Golden Arrows, Platinum Stars, Cape Town Academy and Berea Albion FC
Group E – Mamelodi Sundowns, Harmony Academy, Junction Rovers and Glendene United
Group F – Santos, Black Aces, Phillipi United, and Idas Valley
Group G – Supersport United, Thanda Royal Zulu, Valhalla United and Crusaders
Group H – Ajax Cape Town, Aces Academy (Zimbabwe), Milano United and Ariel Spurs.
The tournament kick-off at Erica Park, Belhar on Wednesday 04 April and continues until Monday 09 April 2012, culminating with the winners final.
