Ajax Cape Town overcame a resilient Maritzburg United at the Harry Gwala Stadium with two late goals to seal the win.
The goals came courtesy of strikes by George Akpabio and Khama Billiat in the 66th and 88th minutes.
Maritzburg United took the game to the visitors from the kick off only to find Sander Westerveld in good form. The Ajax keeper pulled-off a few great saves in the first half to keep his side in the game. A reflex save to save a shot from Kurt Lentjies on the 30min mark followed by a save off Michael Morton’s drive pushing the ball onto the crossbar ensured the score-line remained goalless at the half-time break.
Ajax carved a few scoring chances in the first half but it was a Brett Evans free-kick, saved by Shu-Aib Walters on the 45 minute mark that gave the Urban Warriors their first clear-cut scoring chance.
Ajax came out fighting after the break and their direct attacking play had United on the back foot. George Maluleka, the Ajax midfielder almost opened the scoring when he broke clear of his marker only to fire his shot wide then Khama Billiat dribbled through the Maritzburg defence, but he too fired wide of the goal.
Spurred by these two chances Ajax took control of the game and George Akpabio made no mistake from close range when he put Ajax ahead in the 66th minute of the game. The Nigerian striker was sent clear on goal with a Billiat pass and he put the ball wide of an advancing Walters.
Minutes later Walters was again called into action when he was forced to save off Vilakazi low shot at goal.
United poured forward in search of an equalizer and almost got one when Matle’s shot beat Wetserveld only to hit the cross-bar.
Jenniker cleared the danger with a long ball up-field, Billiat and Akpabio surged forward with the latter setting up Billiat who made no mistake to score Ajax Cape Town’s second goal.
