Ajax Cape Town ended their winless streak in fine fashion when they beat Bloemfontein Celtic 2-0 at the Cape Town Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The game, played in temperatures that hover just above the 30 degree mark was an entertaining affair as Ajax took the game to Celtic who preferred to attack on the counter.
Goals by George Maluleka(50th) and Matthew Booth(60th) sealed the victory for the Urban Warriors who enjoyed the bulk of possession from the first whistle.
Ajax took the game to Celtic from the start with Khama Billiat at the point of their attacks. He was sent clear in the 2nd minute of the game but an alert Patrick Tignyemb in goal for Celtic foiled his attempt to score.
The Ajax midfield of Carelse, Vilakazi, Maluleka and Scott controlled the pace of the game, the home team coped better with the hot conditions than the visitors.
The Booth, Otorogu duel continued throughout the game with the Ajax defender coming out tops, however the Celtic striker did have a rare moment, unmarked in front of the Ajax goal early in the game, however Nazeer Allie came to Ajax’s rescue when he headed the ball off the goal line.
The Urban Warriors kept Celtic penned back in their own half for long periods of time, creating a number of chances in the first half, however the first goal was scored in the opening minutes of the second half when George Maluleka was allowed to attack the right side flank of Celtic.
He cut inside at the near post and his shot across the goal, crossed the goal line just before Brent Carelse crashed the ball into the back of the net at the far post.
Minutes later Vilakazi was tripped on the edge of the penalty area, Maluleka hit his free kick over the defensive wall but wide of the goalpost.
Matthew Booth capped a fine display with his first goal for Ajax Cape Town, Manyama won a corner and Booth headed home at the near post to seal the win for the Urban Warriors.
Ajax continued to press forward via Billiat, Manyama and Vilakazi in search of a third goal however the Celtic keeper and his defence kept the Ajax attack out until the final whistle.
