One of the few remaining buildings at China Camp on San Pablo Bay. China Camp was established in the mid-1800’s by Chinese immigrants, as a shrimp fishing community. It had a population of 500 or so at one point, with the last remaining shrimper and inhabitant, Frank Quan dying in 2016, a week shy of 91. It’s now a state park, in large part down to Frank’s efforts to preserve this piece of history. Shrimp population in the bay had diminished significantly in Frank’s life, making shrimping economically unviable. The primary cause being the diversion of water to southern California from rivers feeding the bay. Less fresh water resulted in increasing salt levels, and fewer nutrients. Frank fished on weekdays, and cooked clam chowder in the restaurant pictured on weekends, pretty much right up to his death.
