Jan Christiaan Smuts (1870-1950) was Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa from 1919 until 1924 and from 1939 until 1948. He was born at a farmstead near Malmesbury, in what was then the Cape Colony. His early education was informal but, at the age of 16, he moved to Victoria College, Stellenbosch, now Stellenbosch University. In 1891 he graduated with first-class honours degrees in Literature and Science. After a brief and less than successful period practising law, Smuts tuned to journalism and politics.
