A rare glimpse of the abandoned Maho Bay Eco Camps. 13.8 acre property next to Maho Bay and the National Park had 114 canvas wrapped "cabins" all connected by boardwalks. The pioneer in eco-tourism camp started in 1976 with a non-renewable 36-year lease. In December 2012 it sold for .95 million.
All that remains of the cabins when I visited was the bare wooden skeleton, mirrors, wood bed frames, some ceiling fans and electrical outlets (no wiring). I was told that its all being disassembled by hand and being returned to nature, while much of the material will be reused elseware.
On 4 trips to the island I never got a chance to stay here, I feel as if I missed out on something special.
