Constantia Glen FIVE 2015, the flagship red of this family owned boutique wine estate, has triumphed in London, bringing home the international trophy for world’s best blended red wine at the 2019 International Wine & Spirits Competition (IWSC).
The 2015 vintage of this prized Bordeaux-style red scored a whopping 96 points out of 100, qualifying as the best of the best and overall winner of the international red blends category. This is the wine’s second major international accolade this year after being awarded Platinum and 97 points in London’s equally esteemed Decanter World Wine Awards.
“It is fantastic to get this sort of recognition for our flagship red wine. We firmly believe that our small pocket of land below Constantia Nek offers ideal growing conditions for the Bordeaux varieties. After many years of hard work in both vineyard and winery, honing our skills in all the aspects of producing this wine, it is a very rewarding feeling to receive this accolade. It is a testament to all those involved in getting it from vine to bottle,” says Constantia Glen winemaker, Justin van Wyk.
Constantia Glen was one of four South African IWSC trophy winners. Now in its 50th year, the IWSC awards excellence in international wines and spirits. The IWSC judging panel describe the Constantia Glen FIVE 2015 as brimming with “fragrant fruits of the forest on the nose, and spiced blackberries with vanilla custard making a delicious statement on the intense palate.”
Meticulously crafted from grapes grown on the Constantia Glen estate, this blend of 33% Cabernet Franc,19% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Petit Verdot, 17% Merlot and 13% Malbec, expresses a broad spectrum of savoury flavours centred around a vibrant core of dark fruit. This compelling wine was matured for 18 months in 75% new and 25% second-fill French oak barrels.
The award-winning Constantia Glen FIVE 2015 is available directly from the estate, as well as at fine dining restaurants and boutique wine shops. It sells at the cellar door for R420 per bottle.
