Ajax Cape Town’s ex-coach, Foppe de Haan is in Cape Town on vacation and he could not resist a visit to Ikamva.
Foppe was also a guest of Ajax Cape Town at the Cape Derby that finished in a 1-1 result between Ajax Cape Town and Santos, and he spent time at Ikamva watch the team train under Maarten Stekelenburg over the past week.
Foppe spoke to ajaxct.com about his stay in Cape Town.
He said, “I am on holiday in Cape Town and the beautiful weather is a good excuse to be here, I had a hip operation and the warmer weather helps a lot with my recovery.
While we are here we plan to travel up the West Coast, to Ceres and the Cape Winelands.
I am also here to work with a children’s foundation as I am their ambassador. We work with young Dutch people to bring them here to participate in CSI work and we brought them to Ikamva where they played a practise match against the youngsters.
I came to Ajax Cape Town to chat with George and Maarten. Not much has changed and but there are changes. Despite losing a number of players like Clayton, Hans, Doutie and Serero the team is doing very well.
Maarten has the same ideas, but in his own way he is building the team with the new players and from what I can see he is doing well. As for the future, all possibilities lie ahead for this team.
I watched the game against Santos; they created a lot and played very well in the first half. In the second half, the game closed up and this allowed Santos back into the game. Ajax was much better in the last 10 minutes but overall it was a good game.
As for me, after my visit I will go back to Holland to coach the coaches at SC Heerenveen. Marco van Basten is the new coach of at SC Heerenveen and I look forward to working with him.
We, my wife and I plan to come back once or twice a year to enjoy South Africa’s hospitality.”
