On Saturday, 05 December 2015 two men went to Harare police to report that while they were driving on the N2 direction Macassar, their vehicle a Hyundai truck with a trailer which was loaded with home appliances was robbed from them. The men claimed that an unknown vehicle collided with the Truck and forced them to stop. When they confronted the driver of the other car, the driver pointed them with a firearm. The two complainants allege that they fled the scene on foot leaving the truck behind. A carjacking case was opened and the case was transferred to Macassar police for further investigation.
Preliminary investigation was conducted and it was discovered that the carjacking never occurred and the two men lied under oath. The investigation led police to addresses in Paarl and Milnerton where the stolen property was recovered and six suspects aged between 26 and 35 year old were arrested. The total value of the recovered home appliances is estimated at R200 000. The suspects face charges of perjury and defeating the end of justice. All suspects are expected to appear in the Somerset West Magistrates’ Court once charged.
The Station Commander of Macassar, Lieutenant Colonel Richard Koopman commended the members for the outstanding investigation which led to the arrest of the suspects. He gave a stern warning to community members to refrain from reporting false cases as it leads to loss of resources and wasteful expenditure.
