James Lowe is a son of the Kommetjie, Cape Town community. He stands 6’4″ inches tall and weighs in at close to 100kgs. The product of the collective mentoring by some of South Africa’s finest big wave surfers, this cover represents James Lowe’s arrival as a force to be reckoned with on the world stage.
After pulling himself onto huge walls of water earlier this year at JAWS in Hawaii, he used his new found confidence to slide into a gigantic barrel at Dungeons outside of Hout Bay on the cleanest swell to pass through there in many years earlier in August. Local sharp shooter Sacha Specker was fortunately out on the water pointing his camera at James, which resulted in October’s seminal cover image.
“I’m so stoked!” …speechless…” said James Lowe.
“The waves this day were really heavy, but I got one, set my line and just enjoyed the view from inside the monster at Dungeons. I didn’t make it out, but it was worth it just to see the colours and wave from within.”
