George Maluleka joined his fellow Bafana team mates in Johannesburg on Monday morning before flying to Durban ahead of the Bafana Bafana vs Senegal game at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The midfielder is the only current Ajax Cape Town player in the Bafana squad however he will be amongst a number of former Ajax players who were selected for the national squad. The Urban Warriors have a strong presence in the side with the selection of, Daylon Classen (Lierse, Belgium), Steven Pienaar (Everton, England) and Thulani Serero (Ajax Amsterdam, Netherlands).
The Ajax midfielder was honoured by his call-up saying, “Being called-up for the national team is always an honour. I am excited with my selection as we are preparing for the World Cup qualifying games to be played later this year.
I aim to make the most of my opportunity.”
Meanwhile, Steven Pienaar is also raring to pull on his Bafana shirt again, in an exclusive interview with ajaxct.com last week he said, “We’ve got to make things right and ensure that we qualify for the 2014 World Cup. We have a lot of young players coming through, they are hungry after getting a taste of the World Cup and they will want to be at the next one in Brazil.
A number of players got a taste of international football recently. I think it’s important to play against strong opposition in the build-up to the qualifying rounds, getting the guys together again having tough games as we prepare for the qualifying games.
We know what’s expected of us. It’s going to be tough but we got the players who can overcome this challenge, as well as a sound technical team who have been working hard at preparing the team ahead of the games. ”
