Man trapped in a harness and rope after ships scaffolding collapses

16 August 2019 By //  by Con Tributor

Pat van Eyssen, NSRI Table Bay duty coxswain, said:

At 15h55, Friday, 16th August, NSRI Table Bay duty crew were activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) following reports of scaffolding collapsed at work in progress at a ship docked in Duncan Dock, in the Port of Table Bay, and a male worker, in a harness and rope, was trapped between the ships deck and the water and requiring rescue.

A Transnet National Ports Authority tug boat had responded to investigate.

NSRI Table Bay duty crew launched the sea rescue craft Spirit of Vodacom and a sea rescue vehicle, WC Government Health EMS rescue squad, Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services, Community Medics, ER24 ambulance services and CoCT Law Enforcement responded.

On arrival on the scene the man was found hanging half way between the deck of the ship and the water in his harness and rope that was attached to the deck of the ship and he was in amongst scaffolding that had collapsed.

The sea rescue craft was positioned underneath the man and in a high-angle technical rescue operation the 55 year old local man was lowered onto the deck of the sea rescue craft and brought to the quayside where paramedics attended to the man and he has been transported to hospital by ER24 ambulance in a stable condition.
