Swift action yesterday by City of Cape Town Metro Police officers led to the arrest of one of the most-wanted hijacking and vehicle theft suspects in the Western Cape and Gauteng, as well as the arrest of another five suspects while executing search warrants.
On Wednesday, 14 September 2011, Metro Police officers were alerted that a Nissan bakkie had been stolen outside the Blue Downs Magistrates Court and immediately began searching for the vehicle.
“They spotted the vehicle in Mfuleni and pursued it with the help of members of the City’s Anti-Land Invasion Unit. Officers managed to stop the vehicle in 5th Avenue, Malibu Village, where they arrested the suspect. He was taken to the Mfuleni Police Station and charged with hijacking and theft of a motor vehicle,” said Metro Police Deputy Chief, Yolanda Faro.
“While obtaining the suspect’s fingerprints using the Morpho Touch machine, it was established that he is wanted for numerous outstanding cases of hijacking and theft of motor vehicles both in the Western Cape and Gauteng.”
During routine operations the same day the Metro Police Dog Unit executed search warrants in Kalkfontein, Kuils River. At a house in Ruiter Street, officers arrested four suspects after they found and confiscated 1258 packets of counterfeit Pacific Blue cigarettes with a street value of R20 000,00. Another suspect was arrested in Sikelele Street, after officers found and confiscated nine packets of counterfeit Pacific Blue cigarettes.
