City Hosts ‘Green Living’ Stand at Homemakers Expo

The City of Cape Town’s Solid Waste Management Department is exhibiting at this year’s Homemakers Expo, which runs from 02 – 05 September 2010.

The expo, now in its 15th year, is being held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. The Department worked with the Environmental Resource Management Department to create an educational stand in the ‘Green Living’ section.

“Our stand is made up of recycled materials and we’ve even re-used the famous 2010 FIFA World Cup™ soccer ball. The Homemakers Expo is the ideal forum to promote home recycling and encourage residents to live a generally friendlier lifestyle. We want to spread the message that recycling and waste avoidance greatly reduces the amount of waste which is sent to disposal sites, and places re-usable materials back into the manufacturing stream. This is extremely important, because it serves to reduce our carbon footprint,” said the Solid Waste Department’s Head for Public Awareness and Education, Leander van Oordt.

Other organisations with the same ‘green’ vision will join the City in exhibiting at the expo, including Mondi SA, Collect-a-Can, Consol, the Plastic Federation, the Paper Recycling Association of South Africa, the Glass Recycling Company and the Recovery Action Group.

“Thousands of visitors are expected to visit this home and lifestyle expo and we hope that they’ll leave with a greater understanding of the urgent need to recycle waste products generated in the home.

“We would like to commend the Homemakers Expo for their socially responsible attitude and thank them for providing the Solid Waste Management Department with the opportunity to showcase waste minimisation strategies and engage with the public,” said van Oordt.

Iziko Museums Commemorates the 500th Anniversary of The Khoi-Almeida Confrontations

Heritage Week is an exciting time at Iziko Museums of Cape Town. From free visits to the museums (excluding the Castle of Good Hope and Iziko Planetarium) to a jam-packed programme of activities, there is no better place to celebrate than at the hearth of our heritage. Saturday, 25 September will have added significance as Iziko Museums commemorates the 500th anniversary since the Khoi-Almeida confrontation of 1510.

This symposium follows on from last year’s successful commemorative event which aimed to explore the impact that the Khoi-Dutch confrontation of 1659 had on South Africa’s contemporary society. History yet again reminds us that it was here, in the sand dunes of Table Bay, that a fierce confrontation took place between the Khoikhoi and Francisco de Almeida of Portugal.

The Portuguese looked down on the ‘savages’ of the African continent, but they paid dearly for their arrogance when Francisco de Almeida, Viceroy of Portuguese India, was returning to Portugal in 1510.  When his crew kidnapped some Khoi children at Table Bay to force the people to bring cattle for barter, the Khoikhoi launched a full-scale attack on the cream of the Portuguese nobility, killing fifty of the crew, including Almeida himself” (Smith & Pheiffer 1993:11).

Five hundred years later we probe what the unearthing of this almost forgotten history means in South Africa today. In our quest to discover who we are; where we come from and perhaps also where it is that we are going; we also explore how we can ensure that our past is not a wasteland, but a space that must be re-engaged in an inclusive manner.

The symposium, chaired by Dr. Basil Kivedo, will feature academics, cultural activists and community leaders such as Desmond Sampson; Dr Yvette Abrahams; Priscilla de Wet; Zenzile Khoisan and Ron Martin.

Be sure to engage in this momentous event as we seek to address these pertinent questions, while also elucidating the continuum of our past, present and future. For more information please do not hesitate to contact Wandile Goozen Kasibe on 021 481 3804/13 or email

Free access during Heritage Week, 20–26 September, presents the perfect opportunity to engage in Iziko’s exciting offerings. Please note that the Planetarium and the Castle of Good Hope will only offer free entry on Heritage Day, 24th September.  From insightful museum tours to groundbreaking exhibitions; musical performances to film screenings, and even taxidermy workshops – this interactive programme offers something for everyone.  Visit Iziko for more information and a complete Heritage Week programme.

Be a Tourist in Your Own City during World Tourism Month

September is World Tourism Month and Cape Town Tourism, in partnership with Table Mountain Aerial Cableway and other top city attractions, is encouraging locals to experience their city as tourists through the ‘My Cape Town Campaign.

‘My Cape Town will run throughout the month of September, incorporating half a million Rands worth of free vouchers, plus special offers, great competitions and an exciting array of events at some of Cape Town’s iconic attractions. The ‘My Cape Town programme of events for World Tourism Month includes ‘My Cape Town Weekend’, in partnership with Table Mountain Aerial Cableway and other key attractions, on the long weekend of Friday 24 September (Heritage Day) to Monday 27 September (UNWTO World Tourism Day); ‘Celebrating Tourism and Diversity’ on World Tourism Day; and ‘Capture My Cape Town, a photographic and video competition which runs throughout the month.

Thousands of free and discounted vouchers for the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, City Sightseeing red bus, Two Oceans Aquarium, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, and more, will be distributed during the course of the month. The vouchers are valid from 24 September, the start of ‘My Cape Town Weekend’, until 31 October 2010. The campaign is also supported by SANPARKS, Robben Island, the V&A Waterfront, Cape Point, Ratanga Junction and Metrorail.

 My Cape Town Weekend

The culmination of the month-long ‘My Cape Town campaign is ‘My Cape Town Weekend’, when locals will be encouraged to redeem their free vouchers (vouchers are valid from 24 September to 31 October 2010 to allow for flexibility) and to attend an abundance of free events in the city. The ‘My Cape Town Free Concert takes place at the V&A Waterfront on Friday, 24 September (featuring up-and-coming Cape Town band iScream and the Chocolate Stix, whose hit ‘My Cape Town’ song and music video is an online sensation) and there will be plenty of family-friendly activities on offer during the 24th and 25th of September in the Company Gardens under the umbrella of ‘My Cape Town in the Company Gardens’.

Details of special offers, giveaways and competitions will be promoted in select community newspapers and on Cape Town radio stations, and will be posted on Cape Town Tourism’s website .

 ‘Capture My Cape Town’ Competition

As an added incentive to being a tourist in your own town, Cape Town Tourism is running a photographic and video competition called ‘Capture My Cape Town. With entry channels spanning MMS, Flickr and Facebook, the competition is open to amateurs and professionals. Prizes for unique images and videos of Cape Town include cash prizes totalling R 30 000 and Hoerikwaggo Luxury Trail experiences. Entries can be posted online via Cape Town Tourism

“September is the month to get out there and be a tourist in your own city” says CEO of Cape Town Tourism, Mariette du-Toit Helmbold, “We’re making it very appealing for locals to experience Cape Town’s most iconic and diverse attractions as we celebrate what Cape Town means to each of us. My Cape Town is the opportunity for Capetonians to renew their appreciation for Cape Town; one of the Places of a Lifetime and a world-favourite destination we can be proud of.”

World Tourism Day – Celebrating Tourism and Biodiversity

The global theme of UNWTO World Tourism Day 2010 is ‘tourism and biodiversity*’, and Cape Town Tourism’s ‘My Cape Town campaign will be promoting environmental awareness throughout the month of September. Cape Town relies on its biodiversity to provide an exceptional natural environment and healthy leisure activities for both locals and tourists, and so conservation is key – of both our natural and cultural assets. To find out more about what Capetonians can do to preserve our biodiversity, visit Cape Town Tourism

* Biodiversity can be defined as the variety of life around us – from the largest animal and the smallest plant to the whole of humankind. In Cape Town, this definition applies to the city’s rich fauna and floristic variety, as well as to our many cultures.

“People often assume that tourism is only about visitors,” says Cape Town Tourism CEO Mariette Du Toit-Helmbold, “Yet we know that for a city to be a great place to visit, it must also be a great place to live. For this reason, encouraging a sense of shared enjoyment and ownership of Cape Town’s tourist attractions among locals is essential. Capetonians are our most powerful destination ambassadors, and they are also the people who can help to protect and preserve our city’s unique tourism assets.”

For more information on ‘Capture My Cape Town, a calendar of ‘My Cape Town events in World Tourism Month and how to access ‘My Cape Town Weekend’ freebies, giveaways and special offers this September, please go to Cape Town Tourism or visit your nearest Cape Town Tourism Visitor Information Centre, 021 487 6800.
