Ajax Cape Town drew Amazulu in the first round of the Nedbank Cup and the Urban Warriors coach Maarten Stekelenburg is looking forward to the challenge.

He said, “Playing Amazulu in the first round is not an entirely bad draw, because we know how they play their football unlike PSL teams who have drawn minnows and have no information about their opponents.

We want to go one stage better than we did in the MTN8 competition where we reached the semi-final, we aiming for a final spot.

Playing against Amazulu is a challenging prospect and we are looking forward to playing them, especially after our last encounter when they beat us, now its payback time. The players are still smarting from the loss and they want to succeed in this competition.

There is a spot in next season’s CAF Confederations Cup up for grabs and we would like to showcase our football at a higher level.”

Ajax Cape Town and Santos overcome their Zambian opposition in a series of practice games played over this past weekend.

On Friday evening Santos beat Red Arrows 3-0 in the first game of the evening. Ajax Cape Town followed suite with a 3-1 win over Zesco United in the second game of the evening.

Both Cape teams showed promise with teams that included a number of new signings as well as players on the threshold of breaking into the PSL teams’.

For Santos Gert Schalkwyk and Nasief Morris appeared in the Santos squad while Ajax Cape Town fielded Toriq Loper, Clint Julius, George Akpabio and Travis Graham to name a few.

On Friday evening Santos left it late with three second half goals to seal the win, for Ajax Brent Carelse scored the first in the opening 10 minutes followed by a goal from Cole Alexander.

Ajax scored their third after new signing George Akpabio broke clear on the right and laid off the ball into the path of Nhlanhla Vilikazi who made no mistake from close range.

The second series of practice games took place on Sunday February 05 at the Athlone Stadium.

Santos took the game to Wesco United running up a 3 – 0 lead until Wesco United fought back with two second half goals, but the People’s Team managed to hold on to their 3-2lead until the final whistle.

In the second game on Sunday, Ajax Cape Town played to a goalless draw against Red Arrows.

The game was an exciting affair with both goalkeepers making crucial saves to keep their teams in the game. The opposition keeper made a number of crucial saves to keep his team in the game.

Sean Roberts, in goal for Ajax mad two great saves to keep a clean sheet, he closed the angle of the advancing striker making the save at the near post. Sean’s second save was a full stretch dive to tip a looping volley over the bar at the far post drawing applause from the crowd attending the games.

Santos was presented with a trophy at the end of the games after scoring six goals and winning both of the games. Congratulations Santos.

Ajax Cape Town coach, Maarten Stekelenburg believes that his squad has the quality to challenge for the top prize in South African football when the ABSA Premiership resumes later this month.

After presenting his new signings during a press conference at Ikamva on Wednesday he said, “We are pleased with the quality of our signings presented here today.

The players here show that our focus on attack is paramount to our game plan. George Akpabio, Clint Julius and Toriq Losper are all attacking players. Last season George scored 18 goals for Plateau United in his first season playing in the top flight of Nigerian football.

Clint Julius is comfortable on either wing and he is an accurate passer of the ball. Toriq is able to play in a number of attacking positions and this gives the team options going forward.

Kyle is the only non attacking player as he is a goalkeeper, he is the youngest of our signings and he will learn a lot from Sander, Sean and Brian (our goalkeeper coach) who will nurture his talent. They have a lot of experience between them and Kyle will profit immensely from their knowledge gained over the years.

Clint, Toriq and Kyle have all come through the Ajax Cape Town Youth Academy, they know our system and they are living the Ajax dream progressing through the Ajax youth ranks to play PSL football.

Currently, we have 25 players in our squad, 3 keepers, 8 defenders, 7 midfielders and 7 forwards, having a small squad is beneficial for the team to maintain competition for places and this leads to a stronger team performance. We ensured that we have good cover for each position with a number players able to fill more than one role in our system.

I have a young and very talented team, playing the European system supported by a good technical team, great facilities and we follow a professional approach in getting the best from our players.”

Ajax Cape Town is proud to announce that the club have signed George Akpabio.

Akpabio previously played for Plateau United in the Nigeria National League, the striker challenged amongst leading goal scorers with 18 goals in his first season (2010/2011) in the Nigerian Premier league.

George attracted the interest of a Norwegian club Viking Stavanger, however Plateau United refused to release him after his trial with the club in August 2011. He also attracted the interest of another Norwegian club Lillestrom, however Plateau United recalled the player.

George arrived at Ikamva in the second week of January 2012 and he has been part of the PSL training squad ever since. He was part of the Ajax squad that attended the high altitude camp in Johannesburg last week.

According to Supersport.com Football Nigeria; George Akpabio’s performances in the lower division earned him a place in SuperSport.com’s ‘10 to watch in NPL this season.’ Akpabio has justified SuperSport.com’s pre-season rating.

The report published on the eve of the season noted: “Youngster George Akpabio is arguably the most interesting player at Plateau United.

Akpabio is a strong player who has the ability to shoot with precision. He also has the qualities of good positioning and the ability to dribble.

“The striker was groomed through the youth ranks of Plateau United before he was elevated to seniors of the club. Akpabio is one of the reasons Plateau United have found themselves back in the top-flight after six years in the lower league.”

A day after arriving back in Cape Town after his week-long trial at sister-club Ajax Amsterdam, Khama Billiat shares his experience with Ajaxct.com.

Billiat arrived in Amsterdam on January 16 and described his reception as very welcoming. “Everyone at Ajax Amsterdam was so nice and friendly,” said Billiat. Reuniting with former Ajax Cape Town team mate, Thulani Serero, was also an added bonus for the young Zimbabwean. “Having Thulani there helped a lot. We made some moves that we used to do when we played together.”

The week in Amsterdam also afforded Billiat the chance to touch base with Hennie Spijkerman, the former Head of Technical Affairs at Ajax Cape Town and current assistant coach at Ajax Amsterdam. “Having Hennie there made a difference because he’s a coach who knows me and what I’m capable of and what I need to do to take my game to another level,” added Billiat.

During the trial period, the player’s versatility was put to the test as he was played in various positions, on the left and right side of the park, as a striker and even in the midfield alongside Serero.

Comparing training sessions between the two clubs, Billiat said, “There wasn’t a big difference, it’s another level of football. They are more focused and they don’t lose the ball easily. They are professional on and off the pitch.”

While in Amsterdam, Billiat was able to observe the technique of the youth players there in comparison with that of the youngsters in South Africa. “The biggest difference I noticed is that they don’t lose the ball as easily and they know when to dribble and when not to dribble. They all know what to do when it comes to keeping the ball and going forward.”

Billiat also had the opportunity to work with the legendary Dennis Bergkamp, an occasion he described great experience.

But the opinion that mattered most was arguably that of Frank de Boer and the Ajax Amsterdam head coach was constructive in his advice. “He said that he was impressed by the way I conducted myself with the coaching staff and the team. He told me what I must work on to be a better player and that they will take it from there and invite me back.”
