In case you haven’t heard, everyone hates Julian Assange. And more to the point, everyone hates WikiLeaks in general. And by “everyone”, I of course mean people with secrets to keep. Namely governments and multinational corporations.

Now that’s absolutely no reflection on the merit of WikiLeak’s work, and the job that they fulfill of making government monsters think twice.

In fact, the degree to which WikiLeaks and Julian Assange are virulently hated by many people is probably directly proportional to the quality of their secret-ousting.

But the threat of entrapment is sending WikiLeaks underground, literally.

United States of America, please note: You will struggle to nuke WikiLeaks.

This is Pionen White Mountains, the nuclear bunker in which Wikileaks will locate some of its servers. It was excavated 98 feet underground, in a rock hill in the center of Stockholm, Sweden, during the Cold War.

Originally, it was just a bomb shelter built in 1943. In the 70s, the Swedes turned the shelter into a full bunker, a civil defense center that was going to hold an emergency unit of the Swedish government in the case of a nuclear war.

The City of Cape Town’s Solid Waste Management Department is exhibiting at this year’s Homemakers Expo, which runs from 02 – 05 September 2010.

The expo, now in its 15th year, is being held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. The Department worked with the Environmental Resource Management Department to create an educational stand in the ‘Green Living’ section.

“Our stand is made up of recycled materials and we’ve even re-used the famous 2010 FIFA World Cup™ soccer ball. The Homemakers Expo is the ideal forum to promote home recycling and encourage residents to live a generally friendlier lifestyle. We want to spread the message that recycling and waste avoidance greatly reduces the amount of waste which is sent to disposal sites, and places re-usable materials back into the manufacturing stream. This is extremely important, because it serves to reduce our carbon footprint,” said the Solid Waste Department’s Head for Public Awareness and Education, Leander van Oordt.

Other organisations with the same ‘green’ vision will join the City in exhibiting at the expo, including Mondi SA, Collect-a-Can, Consol, the Plastic Federation, the Paper Recycling Association of South Africa, the Glass Recycling Company and the Recovery Action Group.

“Thousands of visitors are expected to visit this home and lifestyle expo and we hope that they’ll leave with a greater understanding of the urgent need to recycle waste products generated in the home.

“We would like to commend the Homemakers Expo for their socially responsible attitude and thank them for providing the Solid Waste Management Department with the opportunity to showcase waste minimisation strategies and engage with the public,” said van Oordt.

Day 14: Friday 3 September 2010 – Rodez, Onet le Chateaux

Rodez, situated in the centre of the Averyon region in the south of France, is the heart of the ‘olde world’. The historic town of Rodez is surrounded by Bastide villages, medieval towns and the just too many offerings of traditional local faire to try in a week.

The “Boudicca Travels team” have thoroughly enjoyed their unscheduled week in Averyon, visiting astonishingly old and beautiful places like Albi, fortified Cordes-sur-ciel and Sauverterre de Rouergue, whilst savouring typical French traditional dishes.

Whilst the week has been busy and fun filled from a ‘tourist’ perspective, it has obviously bought with it concerns about this delay in the schedule. Due to circumstances out of their control, the team have had to delay their departure from Genoa (Italy) to Tunisia twice before. Last week when the little yellow Lightweight’s gear box played up, minimizing gearing to 2nd gear with overdrive, the team had no choice but to take ‘Boudie’ to the Land Rover garage in Onet le Chateau.

There she rested up on the ramp for the week whilst waiting for Carlos Barreiro, the Landy specialist, to return from his summer leave. Carlos is as passionate about Landy’s as the team is, and was visibly excited to be able to work on a 1974 Lightweight. However, patience had to be applied again, whilst a tiny spring and synchromesh parts were ordered from the UK. The part arrived at close of work yesterday (2 September).

On arrival at the workshop this afternoon, Martin and Bronnie were thrilled to see Carlos and Fernand Teixeira heads down in the gear box, working with precision. Whilst no promises have been made, they expect to be able to take ‘Boudie’ back to camp at 18h00. The ferry from Genoa to Tunis has been rebooked for 10 September.

This is the time to offer sincere and grateful thanks to the team at Car’s Services Rodez. Fernand, Carlos and Cathy Bourdillat have gone out of their way to assist the Boudicca Travels team during the past week. They are masters of craft and have shown immense willingness to ensure Boudicca is ready for her African challenges. Land Rover Global – you should be proud of this team!

Day 6: Wednesday 25 August 2010 – Rodez, Layoule Campsite

Martin and Richard took Boudie to the garage – the whole of France is on Aout holidays. The mechanic will only be at work on Tuesday 31 August – zut alors!!!
We limped off down the hill with Boudie in 2nd avec overdrive, into the lovely valley of Rodez to set up camp for what would turn out to be a week or more. Ferry re-scheduled once again (3rd change) for 3 September.

Tents up, the boys did their thing again, removing the gear box …etc, there was nothing left inside brave little Boudie by the time they had finished “investigating” her problems – only to ascertain they could not find a problem… this with Bryn regularly on the cell phone from Castlemorton!

G ‘n T’s on the river’s edge (sans ice) watching the world go by at 18h00 (30 degrees) and a full moon rising. Well Lush Life is!

Day 7: Thursday 26 August 2010 – Rodez

Martin and Richard towed Boudie back to the garage, where she will stay until the mechanic returns to work on Tuesday 31st. Bronnie took a painfully slow run on a 5km route along the river and through the village – 34 degrees at 09h00. She thinks these legs were actually made for walking!

In the midday heat, we walked up the many stairs to the ville de Rodez, which was to become our home for the next week or so.

Day 8: Friday 27 August 2010 – Rodez

Happy 85th birthday Dad – I carry you on my shoulder through France en route to Ruxton. So good to be able to talk to you, and hear you sound so upbeat – I love you.

Martin and Richard dropped spare parts at the garage with Fernando, Carlos and Cathy. Martin rented “Aggie” our little white Peugeot 107 who has ferried us to wonderful places whilst we’ve been Rodez-bound.

Day 9: Saturday 28 August 2010

Now we are tourists – ‘Ethel’ took us on a mystery tour of the Aveyron region, looking for wine estates and chateaux. En route we discovered a ‘tres bon’ traditional small village restaurant– and what a treat! Plat du Jour was 4 courses of traditional faire – Bronnie tried duck for the first time ever, and is a definite convert. Lush! Waiters like ‘Manuel’ from Faulty Towers, but so friendly, happy and helpful.

On paying the l’addition, Bronnie ever curious, asked the lady at the bar for places to go and things to do. Her English was pretty good, and she set our sight-seeing schedule for the next 4 days, starting with a trip to Albi after lunch. We are ever grateful as we could have missed these ancient town gems.

Albi, located on the Tarn river, is in the heart of the Aveyron region – ‘the Pink Pearl of Languedoc’ with splendid displays of medieval and renaissance architecture. Also the home of Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, born into high nobility in 1864.

Many architectural delights in the greater Albi, including the old Pont-Neuf red brick bridge dating back to the 11th century and the grand red brick Cathedral Sainte-Cecile. Never seen anything as majestic! “The buildings of the cathedral close form one of the greatest groupings of brick monuments in the world. The close is dominated by two imposing monuments: the Sainte –Cecile cathedral and the old bishops’ palace fortress, the Palais de la Berbie”.

UCT’s R3.5 million investment to combat crime, grime and homelessness in surrounding areas took physical shape on 1 September with the first deployment of security patrols and cleaning staff taking to the streets.

This is the public launch of the Groote Schuur Community Improvement District (GSCID) a project four years in the planning to clean up the business areas, and later residential areas, bordering Main Road, from the South African Breweries in Newlands to Anzio Road in Observatory.

The new cleaning crew is provided by Straatwerk Ophelp, who provide rehabilitation and job creation for the homeless. After a tender process, Orbis Security Solutions were appointed to provide the new security patrols.

Speaking at the launch function, Antony Davies, CEO of the GSCID, thanked UCT for its “massive investment” in the pioneering project.

“This unique partnership shows the value that UCT places on good neighbourliness,” said Davies. “It also shows a commitment to addressing the crime and grime concerns of the community.”

Deputy vice-chancellor Professor Thandabantu Nhlapo said the project was of immediate interest to UCT, because although crime had been significantly lowered on campus, the crime problem in its peripheral areas has resulted in the murders of UCT students and staff.

“Occasionally it’s my job to announce a death to relatives, and believe me, you don’t ever want to do that. It’s the most gut-wrenching thing to do.”

UCT is also upgrading the GSCID offices in Shell Court, Mowbray “as part of UCT’s commitment to urban renewal”, says John Critien, executive director of Properties and Services Department.

“The university is very serious about the upliftment of the area it serves,” said Critien. “We want to be a part of real change.”

The UCT Fairheads Clanwilliam Arts Project took top honours for youth development at the 13th Annual Business Day/Business and Arts South Africa (BASA) Awards, announced in Johannesburg on 31 August.

The project, which was also nominated in the sustainable partnership category, is a collaboration between UCT’s Department of Drama and Michaelis School of Fine Art, as well Magnet Theatre and Jazzart, with sponsorship from Fairheads International Trust for the past 10 years. It started off in the mid-1990s as the Living Landscapes Project under the care of Professor Pippa Skotnes of the School of Fine Art and Professor John Parkington of the Department of Archaeology. At annual workshops, they taught about 100 learners from Clanwilliam about the rich heritage of the area.

As interest and participation grew, Skotnes recruited colleague Associate Professor Mark Fleishman of the Department of Drama to add a performance element to the project. Today, Fleishman and a small army of students and performers run weeklong workshops to prepare hundreds of children, aged between five and 18, for the culminating events – a lantern parade through Clanwilliam, and a performance of /Xam (San) stories first told to the 19th century linguist Wilhelm Bleek and his sister-in-law Lucy Lloyd. (This year, the events take place on Sunday, 12 September.)

Also lending a hand in these preparations is offshoot Comnet, a permanent drama group made up of high school learners from Clanwilliam whose interest was sparked by Fleishman’s workshops. Two of the original 10 Comnet members have since the group’s founding been accepted onto the training programme at Jazzart in Cape Town, and one of the leaders of Comnet receives a trainee bursary from Magnet Theatre to co-ordinate the group.

“For all the other things the project is, it has also become an opportunity for our students, both drama and fine art, to see at first hand the wonderful, transforming, imaginative power of creativity,” says Skotnes.

The BASA accolade, she adds, is just rewards for Fairheads’ continued investment, even after the 2009 death of chairperson Peter Fairhead, who spearheaded the trust’s support for the Clanwilliam project.

“The award is great – it acknowledges our sponsors who have been committed to this project from the very beginning and without whom we would not have been able to take it this far.”

The forced isolation or incarceration of patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) will be in the spotlight at a workshop titled Current Practices, Controversies and Clinical Challenges, in the Faculty of Health Sciences from 3 to 5 September.

Valid medical concerns about risks to the community have to be weighed up against the ethical and legal human rights ramifications of enforced isolation of an individual, and the availability of resources. This controversial issue is expected to spark animated debate.

Other topics on the programme include the evolution and epidemiology of drug-resistant TB in South Africa, diagnosis of the disease using current tools, and drugs, and treatment regimes for infected adults and children.

Pulmonologist Associate Professor Keertan Dheda, one of the organisers of the event, said: “I believe that drug-resistant TB is one of the biggest health threats facing the African continent. It has the potential to destabilise an already compromised TB control system in South Africa.” He added: “Consistent failure to identify and administer appropriate treatment for tuberculosis (TB) cases means that a growing number of TB-infected South Africans are burdening an already strained health care system.”

This is one of the findings of a review of the current situation. The review, co-authored by Dheda, was published in the May 2010 issue of The Lancet and focused on developing countries.

The workshop concludes on Sunday, 5 September 2010, with the closing address delivered by Western Cape MEC for Health, Theuns Botha.
