A British man is in a critical condition after being attacked by a shark while swimming in South Africa. The 42-year-old man was mauled by a great white shark at Fish Hoek beach in Cape Town. Reports said the man, who is believed to live in the city, was rescued by a bystander after he ignored shark warnings to go swimming. City opens all beaches following assessment by shark spotters
Following close assessment by shark spotters late on Wednesday afternoon, all City beaches were opened for swimming on Thursday morning. The beaches from Glencairn to Strandfontein Pavilion were closed on Tuesday following a fatal shark attack at Fish Hoek beach. Man Missing Following Shark Attack
Ian Klopper, NSRI helicopter rescue commander, said: "A 37 year old Zimbabwean man remains missing after eye-witnesses observed him being bitten by a shark 100 metres off Fish Hoek beach at approximately 15h18 on 12 January. An extensive search by rescue craft from NSRI Simonstown, the Metro Red Cross AMS helicopter and a lifeguard rescue rubber duck has revealed no sign of the missing man and a Police Dive Unit will join in the ongoing search at first light tomorrow. Shark Spotters are urging surfers and bathers to continue to leave the water when requested to do so by the shark spotters when they sound their siren alarms warning of shark sightings near to bathing and surfing areas. A recent increase in shark sightings, close in-shore on the False Bay Coast, particularly between Sunrise Beach and Fish Hoek, has seen an increase in requests by the shark spotters for bathers and surfers to leave the water until the danger passes.
