11th October, 2009: At 06h22 NSRI Strandfontein’s volunteer duty crew, the SA Police Services and the Metro Ambulance and Rescue Services were activated following a reported drowning in progress at Strandfontein Beach, in front of the NSRI Strandfontein Rescue Base.
On arrival on-scene NSRI Strandfontein launched their Discovery Rescue Runner and NSRI rescue swimmers were deployed into the surf-line to commence a search for a 20 year old Guguletu man who had reportedly gone missing in the surf while swimming with friends early this morning.
[ad#Google Adsense 125×125 Blog Post]An extensive search has revealed no sign of the man who is missing and who is presumed to have drowned.
The Police Dive Unit and NSRI Strandfontein volunteers are continuing with the search.
Lifeguards and Law Enforcement officers are assisting with the on-going search operation.
The NSRI and SA Police Services are assisting the man’s mother and the name of the man will not be released until further members of the family and his father have been contacted.
It appears that the missing man was part of a group of friends who had arrived at the beach in the early hours of the morning celebrating a friends birthday and they had decided to go for a swim when the missing man reportedly got into difficulties in the 1 to 2 metre surf.
Poor water visibility and surface foam brought in by the South Easterly wind is hampering the ongoing search operation.
