The Green Point and Oranje Kloof City improvement Districts (GP/OKCID) coordinate several clean up operations underneath the Western Boulevard bridge each month. This falls outside of their mandate, however they provide this top-up level of service in order to keep Green Point safe, clean and attractive for residents and business owners.
Three to four times each month the GP/OKCID shift managers and their team of security personnel support and assist SAPS, DPU (Displaced Peoples Unit), a fieldworker from Social Services and Hannes van der Merwe’s team from Straatwerk to remove all litter and do a thorough clean up under the bridge. Between 100 and 200 bags of litter are collected each month from this small area. They also profile, render assistance to and/ or relocate vagrants if required.
GP/OKCID CEO Marc Truss says, “This exercise costs the GP/OKCID approximately R4 500 per month to maintain and we see it as a temporary solution until the City of Cape Town is able to put a more sustainable solution in place.”
