Slave Lodge, Iziko Museums of Cape Town. Remembering slavery.
A ‘column of light’ made up of glowing, translucent, rotating rings of resin contain some of the 6000 names of those who lived and died at the Slave Lodge. The accompanying annotation reads:
Rotating the rings on the column acknowledges the past and provides a symbolic release from oppression. … The rings of the column of light are inspired by tree rings, symbolizing rings of life, passing of centuries and ‘holding’ of memories.
