WESTERN CAPE – Efforts by Western Cape police to rid communities from firearms in the hands of criminals who use it to commit serious crimes yielded success following the arrests of suspects in separate crime prevention initiatives on Thursday, 17 September 2026.
Members of Mfuleni Crime Prevention Unit followed up on information about suspects who are robbing people and selling drugs in Bardale informal settlement. They noticed one of the suspects who fitted the description and when he saw the police members he started to run. The members gave chase and apprehended the suspect, searched him and found a 9mm pistol with ammunition in his possession. He was arrested for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The 17-year-old male will appear in the Blue Downs Magistrates’ Court today.
In an unrelated matter, members of the Anti-Gang Unit deployed in Hanover Park were conducting crime prevention patrols in Halmans Walk chased after a suspect who tried to evade the police. He was apprehended and found in possession of a 9mm pistol with 14 rounds of ammunition. The 25-year-old suspect was arrested for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition and will appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s court once he has been charged.
Members of Mfuleni Crime Prevention Unit arrested two suspects on Wednesday, 16 September 2026, when they were found in possession of a 9mm pistol and ten rounds of ammunition respectively. Both suspects face charges for the illegal possession of a firearm and the illegal possession of ammunition.
The 22 and 23-year-old suspects are expected to appear before the Blue Downs Magistrates’ Court today.
