3rd Annual City Development conference sets sights on transforming African urban spaces:
From 13 – 15 March Cape Town will be welcoming some of the brightest minds in urban development and city planning from around the globe, as it plays host to the 3rd Annual City Development conference.
Addressing the most pressing issues of city-making in Africa, the conference will be focusing on ‘urban transformation & city making’ and ‘infrastructure development & financing’ on day one and two, with ‘smart cities’ taking centre stage on day three.
While the first two days will proceed in traditional conferencing style, day three will see delegates taking part in a series of plenary discussions, case studies, think tanks and round tables regarding the development of future cities and the ‘implementation of tomorrow’.
Industry experts who will be delivering key presentations include Peter Cookson Smith (planner and urban designer at Urbis Ltd, Hong Kong), Stephen Goldie (city planning advisor, Al Ain Municipality, UAE), Brett Herron (mayoral committee member for TDA, Cape Town), Benedicta van Minnen (mayoral committee member for human settlements, Cape Town), Abbas Jamie (Aurecon), Naomi Hoogevorst (Kenya Placemakers), Barry Bredenkamp (South African National Energy Development Institute), Kalane Rampai (PWC), Bhavna Soni (eThekwini Municipality), Guy Briggs (DHK Architects), James Aiello (National Treasury SA) and Holger Adam (Rendeavour, Ghana).
In bringing together government and city officials, developers, urban planners and architects, operators, contractors, investors and solution providers, the 3rd Annual City Development conference aims to equip delegates with multifunctional solutions for the overcoming of major roadblocks and obstacles to the transformation of urban spaces in Africa, specifically.
“African Cities face many of the same challenges most other cities face. However, creating bankable projects can be particularly difficult in cities without access to integrated project advisory that combines funding and finance with design and engineering,” said event speaker, Margot Adelle Orr, who is the masterplanning principal & innovation hub leader at Atkins Acuity in the UK.
Orr will be speaking about smart urban mobility and intelligent transport systems on day three of the event.
