The South African fashion scene is full of creativity and imagination. Cape Town and Johannesburg are full of possibilities for young, emerging models. It constantly needs fresh faces to keep up with the demand and the world of modelling has something for everyone. Once you decide to become a model, it’s time to choose which path you’ll take to get there. Let’s look at 7 very important steps to get you in front of that camera.

Build Your Modeling Portfolio
You’ll need more than a few selfies on your iPhone. Once you know your angles and your poses, it’s time to hire a photographer.

There are two types of portfolios you’ll need:

Traditional, hard copy portfolio. It’s should feature your best images, with a brief catalogue of your modeling experience.
The second is your online portfolio. You’ll need to build a modeling portfolio website.

Find a Modelling Agency
Most models need an agency to help them find work. There are many model agencies based in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Durban that can help you become a model. Research the top modeling agencies and find a few who seem legitimate and who represent the type of model you wish to become.

Get Scouted
Many agents head out of the office to scout models in shopping malls. Agents are looking for a unique face, something different from what is already in the market. They also use social media channels, especially Instagram, to find new talent.
Stay safe and do not trust everyone who contacts you. Investigate to find out if they are trustworthy and never meet up with someone alone.

Do the Hustle
Use Instagram to your advantage. Take inspiration from other models to see how they create a professional account. A lot of influencers and models we all know and love started with vloggers, bloggers, and Instagram personalities.

Live Near a city
Consider moving. If you are serious about becoming a model, move to a major city with more opportunities. You do not want to miss any opportunities, whether it be a meeting at an agency or a casting with a potential client.

Practice Your Poses
Models must know how to pose well. You will have a set of poses that you will use in every shoot, and you will need to make each one look natural and effortless.

Take care of your appearance.
Taking care of your body is a big part of modeling. While there are now more modeling opportunities for various body types and clothing sizes, you still have to take care of your skin, hair, and nails.

To Finish
To become a successful model, you must be determined, persistent, hard-working and able to handle rejections. Remember, modeling jobs will not just come to you, you need to work for them.
