Contrary to popular belief the word abominable did not come from the Latin ab ‘away from home’ and homo ‘human being’, and so literally meant ‘inhuman or beastly’.
Until the 17th century it was frequently spelled as ‘abhominable’, and appears in this form in the works of Shakespeare.
In fact, the word comes to us via Old French from the Latin word abominari, meaning to regard something as a ‘bad omen’ and ominous.
According to the Urban Dictionary an abominari is someone who uses a decent knowledge of the English language to mask his lack of knowledge in anything else.
Abominable Snowman is another name for the Yeti, a large ape-like creature alleged to inhabit the high reaches of the Himalayan Mountains.
The name was brought back from an expedition that the Royal Geographical Society mounted in 1921 to Mount Everest, which found mysterious footprints in the snow.
Abominable Snowman is a translation of Tibetan Meetoh Gangini, the name that Sherpa porters gave to the animal responsible for the tracks.
Yeti is from Tibetan yeh-the, ‘the little man-like animal’.
In the world of gaming the Abominari are a pirate band largely known to operate in the Fronc Reaches.
The Abominari were a study in contrasts. Fond of broadcasting nonsensical mashed-up passages of scriptures, their DropShips and JumpShip appearing on the verge of disintegration, the pirate band’s equipment was actually of excellent condition. Unknown to both the Colonial Marshals and other pirate bands operating in the region, the Abominari operated from a secret base located in the caldera of an extinct volcano on Independence, one of the most populous worlds in the Fronc Reaches.
