AI Is Fast. Advanced Excel Skills Keep Businesses Accurate

16 June 2026 by Con Tributor

NELSPRUIT: As more businesses adopt artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, many employees are discovering that generating information is often easier than validating it.

AI can summarise reports, analyse trends, draft emails, generate formulas and assist with content creation in seconds.

According to Arnold Muscat, Director of College Africa Group, organisations should view AI and Excel as complementary skills rather than competing technologies.

“AI can provide a starting point, but businesses still need employees who can analyse information, validate results and identify errors. Advanced Excel skills remain one of the most valuable workplace competencies in the age of AI.”

Many AI tools can generate Excel formulas, dashboards and reports. While this can improve productivity, employees still need to understand how the calculations work, whether the data is correct and whether the conclusions are valid.

This is particularly important for finance teams, project managers, operations managers and business analysts who are responsible for reporting and decision-making.

In many organisations, these employees are responsible for financial reporting, operational performance, project tracking and management information that directly influences business decisions.

Common risks associated with unverified AI-generated output include:

  • Incorrect AI-generated formulas
  • Misinterpretation of data trends
  • Hallucinated or inaccurate information
  • Poor data quality
  • Reporting errors that influence business decisions

Rather than replacing Excel skills, AI is changing how those skills are applied.

Employees who understand both AI tools and advanced Excel techniques are often able to work more efficiently while maintaining the accuracy and control required in a professional business environment.

The most effective approach is to combine:

  • ChatGPT for research, drafting and productivity
  • Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft 365 integration
  • Advanced Excel for analysis, validation and reporting
  • Human judgement for decision-making

Businesses that invest in both AI literacy and data analysis skills are likely to gain the greatest long-term value from their technology investments.

As AI adoption continues to grow across South Africa, organisations should focus not only on using AI faster, but also on ensuring employees have the skills to verify and validate the results.

AI may generate the first answer.
Excel helps validate the data.
People remain responsible for the decision.

Businesses are increasingly using ChatGPT to draft reports, summarise information, generate content and improve productivity. However, effective use requires an understanding of prompting, validation and responsible AI practices.

Training employees to use AI tools effectively can help organisations save time while maintaining quality, accuracy and business relevance. Learn more about our ChatGPT for Business programme: https://collegeafricagroup.com/chatgpt-for-business-course-south-africa/

Microsoft Copilot is helping organisations unlock additional value from their Microsoft 365 investment by integrating AI into Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams.

Employees who understand how to use Copilot effectively can automate routine tasks, improve productivity and spend more time on higher-value activities. Learn more about our Microsoft Copilot training:

The organisations achieving the greatest success with AI are not choosing between AI and Excel.

They are combining Advanced Excel skills, ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot to improve productivity while maintaining the accuracy, analysis and human judgement required for effective decision-making.
