AI-Powered Excel Is Growing – But Are Businesses Ready?

Nelspruit: South African businesses are rapidly adopting artificial intelligence tools within Microsoft Excel as employees seek faster ways to analyse data, generate formulas, automate reporting, and build dashboards.

Tools such as Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT, and AI-powered spreadsheet assistants are changing how employees work with reports, calculations, and business analysis.

According to College Africa Group, global workplace trends now show growing interest in:

AI-driven Excel analysis,
automated data cleaning,
AI-generated dashboards,
natural-language reporting,
and Python-powered analytics inside Excel.

The organisation says many employees are increasingly using AI tools to:

generate formulas,
troubleshoot spreadsheets,
summarise reports,
identify trends,
and automate repetitive Excel tasks.

However, College Africa Group warns that many businesses may be adopting AI-powered reporting faster than employees are developing the skills needed to properly validate outputs.

“AI tools can generate formulas, summaries, and dashboards very quickly,” says Arnold Muscat from College Africa Group.
“But businesses still need employees who understand the underlying spreadsheet logic and can identify mistakes before decisions are made.”

The organisation says one of the growing workplace risks is that AI-generated spreadsheet outputs may appear professional and convincing even when the underlying calculations or assumptions are incorrect.

“AI produces language and patterns — not guaranteed accuracy,” says Muscat.
“If employees cannot verify the formulas, calculations, or reporting logic, businesses may face serious operational and decision-making risks.”

According to College Africa Group, many organisations are now exploring:

Microsoft Copilot in Excel,
AI-assisted dashboards,
automated reporting,
AI-generated insights,
and advanced analytics tools such as Python in Excel.

The organisation says these technologies can significantly improve productivity when implemented responsibly.

However, College Africa Group believes businesses should avoid assuming AI automatically replaces the need for strong Excel and analytical skills.

Instead, employees still need to understand:

spreadsheet structure,
formula logic,
reporting accuracy,
data validation,
and business reasoning.

“AI can support productivity and speed up analysis,” says Muscat.
“But accountability still remains with the employee and the organisation.”

The company says businesses should focus not only on AI adoption, but also on:

employee AI literacy,
responsible AI governance,
human verification,
and practical workplace training.

According to College Africa Group, organisations that combine AI tools with strong Excel skills and proper governance frameworks are likely to gain the greatest long-term productivity benefits.
