Tensions around the governing coalition in the Theewaterskloof Municipality are dividing the ANC and reached such heights last week, that the ANC’s Provincial Executive in the Western Cape had to urgently intervene. The Theewaterskloof Municipality is governed by a multi-party coalition between the ANC, GOOD, and the Patriotic Alliance.
ANC members in Theewaterskloof are displeased with ANC Speaker Derick Appel, and coalition whip, Raymond Nongxaza, and ensuing disgruntlement eventually led to an urgent meeting called by the ANC Provincial Executive on Thursday, 16 June.
At the meeting, ANC provincial leaders could, however, not mitigate the situation. Tensions reached such heights that ANC Councillor and Mayoral Committee Member, Princess Lesesa, violently assaulted party member Neziza Mdwara, after the meeting.
Soon after the incident, Mdwara laid criminal charges against Councillor Lesesa at the police station in Grabouw.
Mismanagement, corruption, and cadre deployment in Theewaterskloof are becoming an embarrassment for the ANC, and cracks in the party are starting to show.
The DA caucus will write to the Speaker, calling for an urgent investigation into the matter to determine whether Councillor Lesesa breached the council’s code of conduct.
