Atlantis Safety and Security Career Expo

Hundreds of learners, young people, and residents flocked to the City of Cape Town’s Safety and Security Directorate career expo in Atlantis. The aim of the expo, in collaboration with key partners, was to unlock potential and connect the youth to a network of opportunities.

Represented at the expo were the various departments within the directorate: Traffic Services, Metro Police, Law Enforcement, Fire & Rescue Service, Disaster Risk Management Centre as well as the Public Emergency Community Centre.

In addition, the Metro Police K9 Unit and Equestrian Unit conducted displays and engaged with attendees about career options, including how to become a rider or a K9 handler.

‘Everyone who attended gained insight into the inner workings of these departments and the requirements to join in keeping their neighbourhoods safer. The essential role of volunteers was highlighted and how they contribute to safer and stronger communities. I was encouraged by the turnout. As much as our dedicated officers and departments were showcased, safety is everyone’s concern and we can’t do it alone,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

Neighbourhood Watch representatives were also on hand to motivate young people to get involved in helping keep their communities safe, while the City’s Fire and Rescue Service showed off its Reservist Firefighter Programme, which provides structured training for committed community members wishing to serve in a volunteer capacity.

Attendees had access to a wide range of exhibitors and activations, which included other City departments, academies, the South African Police Service and Western Cape Government Departments.

They received guidance on CV writing, how to access digital resources, apply for City jobs and gain an understanding of the City’s recruitment processes.

Ward Councillor Allister Lightburn said the expo was a one-stop opportunity for young people to connect with the institutions shaping communities.

‘I made the request for the expo as many young people in Atlantis are keen to make a positive impact on their community and have enquired about being a part of the Safety and Security Directorate. The event not only provided them with the information they need to make a career choice in that direction, but they were also able to interact with men and women already on the ground and learn about the realities of the job first hand. I am sure I will see many of them in uniform in the years to come,’ added Councillor Lightburn.
