Hard-working Hamel: Kaylan Hamel has been crowned (read the sash) Miss Cape Town 2011.
Geological sciences is typically a grubby business. Master’s student Kaylan Hamel cleans up well, apparently – she’s just bagged the title of Miss Cape Town 2011.
Hamel is no stranger to beauty awards, having already won several international titles. Honours include Miss Teen World 2003, Grand Champion Model of the World 2004, Carnival Queen of the World 2004, Miss Tourism Queen International African Princess 2005, Miss Africa 2006 and Queen of the Universe 2007. That’s allowed her to visit to places like Ecuador, the US and China.
“I started pageantry a very long time ago when I was 13 as just a fun hobby to do with my friends,” she says.
Hamel entered the Miss Cape Town 2011 event to raise funds for two “amazing” charities – the Cancer Association of South Africa and the Bright Star Safe House.
“My family has suffered quite a bit when it comes to cancer and fortunately all of my family members are now survivors and cancer free, so I had to show my support.”
In her spare time, she trains children in deportment, interviewing and modeling techniques. When not studying rock fabrics and stable isotopes, that is.
