The Democratic Alliance in the Western Cape calls on all residents to increase and maintain vigilance around Covid-19 safety protocols. Although government and residents have together done well to turn the tide of infections in the province, an increase has been recorded in localised (“bushfire”) cases leading to a growth in the total number of cases, close to 1 000 since last week, to-date.
MPP Wendy Philander comments: “Globally, we have seen a rise of Covid-19 second waves and resumption of lockdowns. As residents in the Western Cape, we cannot afford to undo the great work we have achieved with provincial government in stopping the spread of the virus. For these reasons, I have submitted parliamentary questions on the provincial Health Department’s strategy regarding readiness for an increase in infections and the deliverables put in place in this regard.”
At the time of briefing the Covid-19 Ad-hoc Committee at Provincial Parliament in mid-July, the national Department of Health indicated that the Western Cape was leading the testing of digital tracing concept. Only in September – about six months after the beginning of lockdown – was the use of a mobile application announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa.
MPP Philander concludes: “I further call on National Government to improve the surveillance and tracking system, and keep residents informed of the performance thereof. As much as residents need to remain vigilant, we require a smart, data-driven system to keep track and maintain any spread.
As Chairperson on the Standing Committee of Health, we will continue with rigorous oversight on these matters to ensure that our response in the province remains beyond reproach. It is now more important than ever that our systems are well established and integrated.”
Residents should also be mindful on that fact that COVID-19 is not only the responsibility of government but a responsibility for each and every one of us. Let us remain cognisant in limiting the spread to fellow residents. The effect of COVID-19 is enormous, therefore we call on all residents to continue to maintain good hygiene and follow the golden rules:
- Wear a mask
- Wash hands regularly
- Maintain physical distancing (1.5m)
- Avoid crowded places, especially if there is poor ventilation
- If you are sick, stay home and call hotline for more info”
The DA encourages all individuals and organisations towards responsible behaviour as we continue the fight against Covid-19.
