Cape Town: A tale of two cities

South Africa has the highest levels of income inequality in the world. This is clear to see in the landscapes of any of South Africa’s large cities, where the contrasts between wealthy suburbs on the one hand and poor ‘townships’ and informal settlements on the other are vast. In this video, I show some scenes from different parts of Cape Town: the city center, Sea Point, the Waterfront, Camps Bay, and Nyanga.

As the soundtrack for this video, and as a way of highlighting what I show here, I have used the song ‘Homeless’ by the wonderful South African group Ladysmith Black Mambazo. You can find a video of the song being performed by the group at the Nobel Peace awards on YouTube (where you can also find a lot more of their music.)
