Clint Abrahams, NSRI Strandfontein deputy station commander, said; At 03h39 on Sunday 11 September our NSRI Strandfontein volunteer duty crew were activated following reports of a 51 year old angler, from Ottery, Cape Town, swept off rocks while fishing from shore with two family members (believed to be his nephews) and missing at Monwabisi just West of the Monwabisi tidal pool on the False Bay Coast.
“Our NSRI volunteer duty crew launched our sea rescue craft I&J Rescuer III and our DISCOVERY Rescue Runner while our NSRI 4×4 rescue vehicle, the SA Police Service, a Metro EMS rescue squad conducted shore patrols along the beach front.
“On arrival on-scene an extensive sea and shore search commenced and at first light a Metro Red Cross AMS helicopter combed the search area from air but no sign of the missing angler has been found and he is presumed to have drowned.
“A Police Dive Unit have been summoned to the scene and a sea and shore search continuing.
“Police have opened an inquest docket.
“It appears that the 3 anglers were on the shores edge standing on rocks at the peak of the Spring high tide while fishing when a wave swept the missing man off rocks and it is suspected that he may have been caught in rip currents and was swept out to sea.
“Family of the missing man have been summoned to the scene and they are being assisted by trauma counselors.”
