Cape Town beats Eskom load shedding

22 June 2015 by Alan

The City of Cape Town took to Twitter and Facebook to inform residents that it had averted load shedding stage 1 planned for Sunday evening.

“Load shedding will be avoided tonight for areas under control by the City’s load shedding schedule. This is due to spare generation capacity at the Steenbras power station,” it said on Facebook.

An official at the City of Cape Town confirmed that certain areas would not be experiencing stage 1 load shedding from 17:00 on Sunday.

The City also had a notice on it’s website:

Eskom announced on Sunday that it would implement stage 1 load shedding from 17:00, which was likely to continue until 22:00.

“This is due to increased electricity demand and a shortage of generation capacity resulting from technical faults at some of our power station units,” said the power utility.

It said in winter the electricity demand peaks in the morning and evening as more electricity is used during these times.

The power utility also urged electricity users to consider energy efficient ways of keeping warm, especially as cold weather conditions sweep across the country.
