Super Storm Sandy hit the Jersey Shore on October 29th, 2012 and was the second-costliest hurricane in United States history. I took some photos in Point Pleasant, NJ this weekend and then took Rte 35 south towards Lavallette and Ortley Beach. I had tried doing this on several occassions but due to the road closures and restrictions I never made it past Bay Head.

The entire section of Rte 35 is under construction and there are many shifts in the roadway that one is forced to take with most of the side roads being closed. Most of the traffic consits of contractor vehicles and heavy equipment moving through the area. While driving you can’t help but notice the empty homes and contractor vehicles parked everywhere with dumpsters lining many driveways. Can’t help but think how erie it must be at night.

I spoke with a home owner in Ortley Beach. His home was totally destroyed by the storm but he was rebuiding. His house was across the street from the ocean and was in the process of being framed out. Even though he was rebuilding, he pointed out the barren lots where his neighbors once lived and to the homes that were damaged but haven’t been touched since the storm. He was saddened to see his neighborhood in this condition but looked back at his home, a big smile came back to his face and he went back to work.

These are the photos of the area 16 months after the storm hit.
