Riva del Garda – view of the Venetian Castle – La Rocca

This is Riva del Garda, a town at the northern most tip of Lake Garda
Now I was outside, I could get a better shot of the Venetian Castle.
Up in the mountains above Riva was this Venetian Castle from the time period that the Venetian’s ruled the area.
The Venetian fortress, built in 1508 on a hill of the steep slopes of Mount Rocchetta, affords a splendid view of the city and the northern part of the lake.
It is called the Bastione.
This fortification can be seen from the lake on the wooded hillside a couple of hundred metres above the town of Riva del Garda. Built on the lower slopes of Monte Rocchetta in the early part of the 16th century, it was designed as a protective structure for the settlement below as Venetian power diminished. It’s military value was eventually destroyed by the French army in the 18th century and the remains now serve as a museum and as a restaurant with a panoramic view. The Bastione can be reached in half an hour’s walk from the town.
