It is one of the most distinctive castles-palace in Spain and throughout Europe by virtue of its ship’s bow shape. The Alcázar was originally built as a fortification, documented since the 12th century but probably much earlier, but has served as a royal palace, a state prison, an artillery center and a military academy ever since. It is currently used as a museum and has an exhibition of military archives.
