On the 3d day of January one of the first ward companieswas organized—the Georgia Volunteers. Joseph Payne Logan, M. D. First Years Of The War 167 Another military company was organized on the 25th ofJanuary, with the following officers: Captain, G. W. Lee; firstlieutenant, Jabez R. Rhodes; second lieutenant, G. W. Anderson;ensign, John A. Foreacre. When Jefferson Davis arrived in Atlanta on the 16th ofFebruary, en route from Washington to Montgomery, Ala., totake the oath of office as president of the Southern Confederacy,he was given a royal ovation by the people of many counties jour-neying to Atlanta to see Atlantas distinguished guest. A saluteof seven guns was fired by the Atlanta Grays as the presidentstrain rolled into the depot, and he was met and escorted to theTrout House by a large committee of citizens, the mayor andcommon council, the local military and fraternal organizations,and the five companies.
