"In 1690 the Kanonkop warning post was set up by the East Indian Company. The reason for this being, in the words of Simon van der Stel: "to call the men to arms as soon as possible, in case of emergency, we decided to place small guns at different spots to give them notice to rally around their standards. One was placed on the Tygerberg, once at the Schuur, another on the Stellenberg kloof and another at Drakenstein".
