Celebrations as Absa hands over yet another Possibilities Unearthed project at Thembalethu High School in George
Absa brings seeds of hope to the community of George

Wednesday, 12 October 2022: As part of the 2022 BCX Shootout challenge, the proudly Pan-African bank, Absa, handed over another vegetable garden to its beneficiaries at the Thembalethu High School in George.

This project is part of the bank’s focus to play its role in society and empower communities to maximise their available resources to address the persisting issue of food insecurity

FoodForward SA said its food price comparison review between 2021 and 2022 showed that basic food prices had risen 12.9 percent in the past year alone. It said the prices of some food categories had increased, with fresh fruit up by 62 percent, fresh vegetables up by 9.3 percent, cereals up by 23 percent, grains up by 12.2 percent, and spreads up by 34.5 percent.

Thembi Klaas – Regional Segment Head Commercial and Public Sector at Absa, said, “The garden handover at Thembalethu High School marked another milestone for the bank, as we continue to contribute positively to the communities we operate in. We believe South Africans have what it takes to grow and contribute to the success of our country, regardless of the economic background they come from.”

“The Possibilities Unearthed project offers children the opportunity to live in a healthy, green environment where they learn how to grow their own food. This can give them the physical and mental boost they need to perform optimally at school,” Klaas added.

Absa aims to roll out the Possibilities Unearthed project during key Absa-sponsored events in communities that are most vulnerable to food insecurity.

Norman Cona, the school principal says, “Vegetable gardens are one of the best ways to supplement meals for our learners. The additional nutrition from fresh herbs and vegetables significantly improves a student’s ability to concentrate and perform better.”

“We are grateful to Absa as this garden project will help increase physical activity for us and the children through the garden maintenance activities,” Cona concluded.
