Cape Town – Chapman’s Peak Drive and Toll Plaza has been closed until further notice, as travelling through the drive has become dangerous due to heavy rains, authorities said on Monday.
“Entilini, the concessionaire managing the drive on behalf of the Western Cape Government, will be monitoring the situation,” provincial Department of Transport and Public Works spokesperson Byron la Hoe said in a statement. He suggested Old Kaapse Weg as an alternative route.
“The safety of motorists and other road users is currently the most important priority. The drive will be reopened once deemed safe for motorists and road users.”
He said more road closures on the drive will be imposed during the winter season due to unknown and possible risk factors.
Should the weather clear up today, Chapman’s Peak Drive would be opened for a brief period to accommodate motorists during peak hours (16:00 to 18:00), La Hoe said.
