Chrysalis Academy’s violence prevention programme

Yesterday, the Chrysalis Academy (CA) concluded its Youth Hub Ambassador (YHA) workshop which took place between 11 – 14 August 2020. The conclusion of the workshop was marked by the handing over of uniforms and starter kits to the YHAs. Please see photos attached.

Minister Fritz welcomes the conclusion of the workshop as a milestone for the Department of Community in working to achieve its Western Cape Safety Plan apex priority of expanding the CA programme. This programme ultimately aims to reduce and prevent violence in our communities.

Minister Fritz said, “Over the course of the workshop, 8 young people received training in

self-awareness, coaching and mentoring, protocols, report writing, administration skills and effective communication. This will equip them once they are deployed remotely at various youth hubs across the province which include Kraaifontein, Nyanga, Philippi/Hanover Park, Mitchells Plain, Samora Machel, Mfuleni, Khayelitsha and Harare.”

The CA YHAs will represent the core values and principles of the Academy in their communities. YHA will act as role models for youth and develop young leaders in their communities. Ambassadors will be active on the ground from Monday, 17 August 2020.

This will be achieved by creating alternative programmes to crime and violence by:

• linking youth to opportunities;
• hosting and co-ordinating recreational activities and events;
• offering CA programmes to the youth;
• identifying and encouraging youth to attend the 3-month programme; and
• creating a strong network of CA graduates; and
• encourage community projects led by graduates.

Minister Fritz continued, “The Western Cape Safety Plan aims to halve the murder the next ten years. It will do this by firstly ensuring the data-led and evidence-driven deployment of law enforcement officers deployed through the Law Enforcement Advancement Programme (LEAP). This will be complemented by a range of violence prevention programmes such as the YHA.”
