City asks civil society organisations to register their details

19 March 2010 by Alan

Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) that would like to hear directly from the City of Cape Town for partnership, grants-in-aid or public participation opportunities, are invited to register on the City’s new CSO database.

A CSO is another name for an NGO (a non-governmental organisation), or a CBO (a community based organisation), which is a legally constituted organisation with no participation or representation of any government.

Organisations include civic and ratepayers organisations, arts and culture,
early childhood development, environmental organisations, faith-based organisations, health, schools, seniors, special needs (people with disabilities), sports and recreation, welfare, women and youth.

CSOs are particularly important, as they are the backbone of the City’s ward forums. They are also entitled to be consulted on a number of planning issues, the development of budgets, by-laws and policies, in terms of the City’s Public Participation Policy and the IDP (the City’s 5-Year Plan, also known as the Integrated Development Plan).

Deadlines for registration begin in March, although the City will introduce an annual re-registration process to ensure maximum accuracy.

(In addition to the usual contact details, the registration forms will ask for proof of your mandate to represent your community.)

Once you have done so, please mail, e-mail or fax the form to your local subcouncil.
