The City of Cape Town’s Public Housing Department is continuing to carry out maintenance work at its Community Residential Units, which offers affordable housing to almost 230 000 residents. The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Malusi Booi, visited some of the units in Uitsig today, Thursday, 30 June 2022, to check on work currently under way and to celebrate the end of Youth Month with some of the young contractors working there.
The City continues to carry out maintenance and upgrades at its Community Residential Units (CRUs) across the City and we are committed to improving service request turnaround times. Our staff members and contractors are working hard to upgrade our public housing, which will improve the lives and living conditions of residents. On average, the City attends to more than 140 service requests per month in Uitsig alone and we continue to seek ways to improve on our delivery. Over the past two years, the City has spent approximately R1 billion in maintenance at our CRUs.
‘I am pleased by the repair work we have seen in Uitsig today. It is especially pleasing to see the work being carried out by so many young people.
‘The City is proud to empower the youth, particularly young women, who have not always been included in the built environment space.
‘It is our hope that the youth will be inspired to look at career opportunities, which may be unusual or uncommon. There are opportunities for study and employment that young people may not have even heard of or considered. As Youth Month comes to an end, it is time for our young people to imagine building a prosperous, successful future for themselves and their loved ones,’ said Councillor Booi.
