The Destruction of the Wager Shipwreck and Maritime Disasters (18th–19th Century): Historically nicknamed the “Cape of Storms,” Table Bay was the site of numerous catastrophic shipwrecks that made international maritime news. Events like the sinking of the Dutch East Indiaman *De Smatrix* or the British troopship HMS *Birkenhead* off the nearby coast—which established the heroic “women and children first” protocol—were widely reported in European gazettes, building the Cape’s dramatic maritime legend.
