The City of Cape Town is urging residents of Delft and surrounding areas to come out and support a community concert on Sunday, 12 February 2012.
The concert will be a family-focused event, and most of the artists will be from the area in order to encourage local talent.
It will be headlined by The Rockets, as well as Alister Izobel and The Everlivings, a well known reggae band. The Rockets have supported many international acts in South Africa, including Ronan Keating, Usher, The Spice Girls and Alicia Keys.
The giant puppets from UNIMA, which were seen during the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ will be at the event.
The City’s Come and Play unit, which is linked to the Sports Recreation Department, will also be in attendance, and will entertain children with jumping castles, games and face painting.
“Families are encouraged to come out, bring a picnic or Sunday lunch, and enjoy an afternoon of entertainment in a space originally designated for this very purpose,” said Lesley Truter, Project Developer, Arts and Culture. The department tries to organise three to four such events a year, depending on budget.
The City is encouraging communities to reclaim their public parks with positive initiatives such as concerts, in order to discourage the use of public spaces for anti-social types of behaviour.
Concerts are often held over holiday periods, such as over the festive season. The switch-on of the Christmas lights in Adderley Street in December, for example, has become an annual highlight.
There are a number of other outdoor concert offerings in Cape Town that are not organised by the City, perhaps the best known being the Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts.
De Waal Park in the City Bowl has also started to host free concerts in its historical Edwardian bandstand every second Sunday over summer. They are organised by Friends of De Waal Park, and offer a diverse range of music, from classical to rock.
Other regular outdoor concerts are held at the VA Waterfront and numerous other venues. Watch the local media for more details.

The concert is free of charge, and is an alcohol-free event. Security officials will be monitoring this.
