This Sunday, 13 November 2011, sees Cape Town hosting its annual Remembrance Day Church service and wreath-laying ceremony and the Discovery Cape Times Big Walk. In order to accommodate these events, the City of Cape Town will close certain roads in the CBD on Sunday from 05:00 until 20:00.
Remembrance Day Church service and wreath-laying ceremony
The City of Cape Town will host its annual Remembrance Day Church service and wreath-laying ceremony to remember those who fell in defence of their country during all wars, including the Anglo-Boer War, World Wars I and II and the border wars.
The City’s Executive Deputy Mayor, Alderman Ian Neilson, will lead members of the diplomatic and consular corps and the South African National Defence Force as well as religious leaders and dignitaries in laying wreaths at the Cenotaph in Adderley Street.
The following temporary road closures will be in place to accommodate the ceremony:
- Adderley Street, between Strand Street and Hertzog Boulevard, will be closed to traffic from 05:00 to 14:30
- The two left-hand lanes adjoining the Standard Bank Centre on Hertzog Boulevard, between DF Malan Street and the Heerengracht
Discovery Cape Times Big Walk
The City of Cape Town’s Sport, Recreation and Amenities Department is partnering with the Treble Group to host the Big Walk which is considered one of the city’s most popular mass participation sporting events.
The event consists of ten varied distance walks, all culminating on the extended fields of St. George’s Grammar school. The 20 km walk has been re-instated this year, starting along the West Coast at Blaauwberg.
Executive Mayor Alderman Patricia de Lille will fire the starting pistol for the 10 km route at the Grand Parade, while the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services, Councillor Tandeka Gqada, will start the 12 km route at the Green Point Urban Park.
The following temporary road closures will be in place accommodate the ceremony:
- Adderley Street from Strand Street to Wale Street between 07:00 and 09:30
Filming in the CBD
There will also be filming taking place in the CBD on Sunday which will result in the following road restrictions:
- The section of Loop Street between Hout Street and Strand Street between 06:00 and 20:00
There will be intermittent temporary closures (closures not longer than 3 minutes, followed by a non-closure period of at least a 15 minutes) of the sections of:
- Loop Street between Wale Street and Strand Street between 06:00 and 20:00
- Loop Street between Strand Street and Hans Strydom between 13:00 and 20:00
- Long Street between Strand Street and Wale Street between 09:00 and 20:00
- Long Street between Hans Strydom Avenue and Strand Street 13:00 and 20:00
