For the 2021/22 financial year, an impressive 99,8% of the 2021/22 national grants allocation was spent or contractually committed by the City. Overall 100% of 2021/22 provincial grants allocation was spent or committed. This is the best performance of its many diverse grant funds in many years.
- The Urban Settlements Development Grant (used for capital infrastructure): 99,5% of the 2021/22 allocation of R972,4 million was spent or committed
- The Informal Settlements Upgrade Partnership Grant: 100% of the 2021/22 allocation of R518,1 million was spent or committed
- The Public Transport Network Grant: 100% of the 2021/22 allocation of R948,6 million was spent or committed
‘This is a remarkable achievement given the importance of delivering the many services and infrastructure used by communities across the City. Grants equated to more than R4,2 billion for the 2021/22 financial year. The vast majority of unspent grant funds at 30 June 2022 are already committed to existing and ongoing contracts, and service delivery was not impacted negatively. The small percentage of money rolled over is due to material reasons a project could not be completed, for instance due to volatility in the project area.
‘This achievement shows the City’s dedication to delivering services to residents. One need only look at these figures to see that we are spending the money that we are given on the people it is meant for. It takes commitment, hard work, accountability and expertise to ensure that money allocated to improve the living conditions of the most vulnerable residents is spent on what it is earmarked for. We will continue to ensure that grant funding, which primarily provides additional assistance to the most vulnerable, is spent responsibly and with the intention of improving lives,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Finance, Councillor Siseko Mbandezi.
