City to host the 17th Junior World Judo Championships

2 November 2011 by CapeTownNewsReader

The City of Cape Town’s Sport and Recreation Department, in partnership with Western Province Judo will be hosting the 17th Junior World Judo Championships at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

Venue: Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC)
Date: 3 – 6 November 2011
Time: 10:00 – 18:00 daily
All media and spectators are welcome to attend. Entrance is free.

The Junior World Judo Championships represent the highest level of international competition for practitioners of judo who are under 20 years of age. The championships are held annually and male and female participants from as many as 60 countries compete in the respective seven weight categories.

Judo (meaning “gentle way”) is a modern martial art and combat sport created in Japan in 1882. Its most prominent feature is its competitive element, where the object is to either throw or takedown one’s opponent to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue one’s opponent with a grappling maneuver, or force an opponent to submit by joint locking or by executing a strangle hold or choke.

As the proud host South Africa will increase its profile as a fully participating member of the International Judo Federation. The event creates the opportunity for all South African judo practitioners, coaches, managers, referees and officials to participate at an international standard in their home country. In addition it creates exposure of all participants and spectators to the highest standard of judo in the world, and integrates people with disabilities at the highest level of sport.
