City to host triathlon at Big Bay Beach and swimming clinics at two pools

16 February 2012 by CapeTownNewsReader

The City of Cape Town’s Sport, Recreation and Amenities Department is partnering with 11global to host the fourth annual ELEVEN Cape Town Triathlon at Big Bay Beach on Sunday, 19 February 2012.

The triathlon consists of a 1,5km swim, 40km bike ride and a 10km run. 11global aims to develop this race into the premier Olympic-distance event in South Africa. The event is sanctioned by Triathlon South Africa.

In partnership with Western Province Triathlon, 11global will also present swimming clinics for 150 learners on behalf of the City. The clinics will be conducted by international triathletes at the Atlantis Swimming Pool and the Bonteheuwel Swimming Pool. Some of the learners will participate in the triathlon as part of 11global’s development programme.

The clinics will be devoted to learners currently participating in the City’s swimming programmes. It is hoped that the clinics will further enhance training and progress for new swimmers.

“These programmes contribute not only towards youth development, but also to the development of communities and the fostering of social cohesion. The focus of these programmes is to create opportunities for the youth, encourage a healthy lifestyle and to offer alternative forms of entertainment in order to discourage anti-social behaviour. This shows our commitment to being a Safe City and a Caring City,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services, Councillor Tandeka Gqada.
