The City of Cape Town is proud to be a sponsor of the third annual Cape Town International Ballet Competition (CTIBC) which will take place from 27 February to 4 March 2012 at the Artscape Theatre in central Cape Town.
Dancers from various countries are expected to compete, including the Republic of South Korea, Argentina, Armenia, Russia, the United States of America, Australia, China and Cuba.
A strong South African contingent comprising 22 dancers of varying ages from Gauteng, Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Western Cape have entered.
The City has made R270 000 available towards the competition. This funding will be utilised for securing the venue as well as marketing and publicising the event.
The CTIBC is considered one of the highlights on Cape Town’s cultural calendar and this year promises yet another thrilling dance event.
This international competition places Cape Town on par with other countries around the world in terms of dance and allows artists the opportunity not only to compare their work, but to hone their skills.
“The City looks forward to welcoming the prestigious judges and dancers taking part in the CTIBC to Cape Town. The CTIBC is the only international ballet competition on the African continent and is an exciting platform for local dancers to gain experience performing with the world’s best. The City’s funding towards the CTIBC supports two of our key objectives: the inclusion of emerging artists in world-class events, and bolstering Cape Town’s reputation as a stage for the world’s top events,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Tourism, Events and Marketing, Councillor Grant Pascoe.
Elimination rounds will take place from 19:00 on Tuesday, 28 February, Wednesday 29 February and Thursday 1 March 2012, with tickets at R40,00 each. The final round will take place at 20:00 on Friday 2 March 2012, with tickets from R65,00 to R225,00 each. The winners will be announced at a gala performance at 20:00 on Saturday, 3 March 2012.
Due to the popularity of the gala performance during previous competitions, a second gala event has been scheduled for 15:00 on Sunday 4 March 2012 at which the CTIBC winners and distinguished international and SA ballet stars will perform and the South African candidate to compete in the Youth America Grand Prix will be announced. Tickets for both gala performances range from R190,00 to R300,00 each.
All tickets are available through Computicket at www.computicket.co.za.
